Our house is only 5 months old, and I just removed a huge (and disgusting) hair and mold clog from the shower drain. The drain is in the center of the shower floor. The shower floor pan is heavily textured, so a sunction-cup type drain cover would not stick. Any ideas to help prevent these huge hair clogs? I really don't want to be cleaning this out 2-3 times every year for the next 30 years we plan to live here. Thanks!
Preventing clogged shower drain?
Stop losing hair? Seriously, you could put a drain cover with smaller holes, but it will still allow hair to get into the drain. Cleaning the clog out of the drain is going to be regular routine maintenance of your shower. The alternative is a clogged drain. If you only have to do it every 4-6 months, it is cheap insurance against plumbing problems.
Reply:Stop yanking it in the shower
Reply:You can buy stuff from the plumber that you put in your drains every month to keep them clear. I would suggest this.
Reply:Cut your hair short. It causes less clogging.
We have been in our house 29 years and it requires cleaning
(our shower) about once or twice a year. But we wear short hair cuts.
If you are on city sewer, use a drain cleaner every month or so.
If you are on a septic you need to flush a couple packets of yeast once or twice a year to keep your tank healthy.
But any long hair will be a problem.
Reply:Easy and cheap way to keep your drain clear is either go to a store and buy a drain screen and just dump it once a week or buy a bottle of toilet bowl acid and pour about a 1/4 of it down your drain every 2 weeks.
