Quick Maths Question- should be no trouble for you clever clogs out there.?
15 play no sports at all

20 play either or both

18 of the 20 play hocky

the other 2 must play tennis

add to the 12 who play tennis and hockey

= 14

20 - 6 (difference between hockey and both sports)= 14

14 seems correct to me.
Reply:Well..this is a set problem..it would be easy if you use circles that overlap..which you call a venn diagram..that would help you visualize what you're doing..

label 1 circle hockey, and the other tennis..

start at the innermost intersection..so put 12..

on the hockey circle that doesn't intersect, put number of players who play hockey only..to get this subtract all hockey by those who play both..so 18-12..which is 6..

put 15 on the outside of the diagram for they don't play..

add all of the numbers to determine how many do not play tennis only.. so 15+6+12=33..to get how many play tennis only, subtract the number of those who do not play tennis only..so 35-33=2..so 2 play tennis only..

to get how many play tennis all in all..add those who play tennis and hockey, and those who play tennis only..so you get 14!
Reply:itz 2!!!
Reply:There are a couple of ways to interpret the question, but I think only one is correct.

I thought it was 2, but then I realised I had to add the 12 students who played both

To work out how many play just hockey:

18-12=6

Therefore

6(hockey)+12(both)+15(neither)=33

To work out how many play just tennis:

35-33=2

However, the total tennis players:

2(just tennis) + 12(both) = 14

Hope I helped!!
