when i check task manager svchost.exe under the user name of system is running constantly at 99% at over 64k. i keep having to manually end the process just so i can actually use the computer. this causes some slight instability in the system. i have recently gone wireless and am wondering if this is causing the high memory use, i never had this problem with ethernet connection. can anyone help cos i don't want to spend money on more memory if that won't fix my problem.
When my computer is starting up svchost.exe runs at 100% for ages and clogs up my memory.?
If you have Windows XP Professsional, type this in on the Windows Command Prompt: C:\%26gt;tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"
This can help you determine what specific service is causing the slowdown. I doubt that wireless services would cause this problem. More likely than not, you have malware, so if you see something suspicious in the breakdown provided by the first step, search on the Internet for information. Anti-malware software scans might also help.
Reply:Do your Windows updates, there has been an issue in the last few months that gets svchost all jacked up.
Then check your driver/software version of the newly installed wireless. If at all possible, jump into the settings and tell it not to start with Windows (you can do this in msconfig if there is no GUI option in the software).
If all else fails, uninstall the wireless software. Reboot, see if the problem is still there. If not, then it's the software and you should contact the manufacturer.
Reply:I believe this caused by Windows Update and turning this off will stop this problem. I have not tested this, though I have the same problem, as I do not wish to turn off auto updates - I just wait a while (4 minutes after boot to desktop) before using the computer.
I have 2Gig of memory.
Hope this helps

P.S. Many people think this problem is due to a virus - The virus (or spyware) that used to do this is very VERY very old and the most basic of virus checkers will stop it.
Reply:It's a common virus not a system application. Run a anti-spy-ware program for eg. Spybot - S%26amp;D
Reply:svchost.exe is a file that reads the registry to see what it has to load next to get your computer to run (basically, not 100% accurate, but will do as an explanation for now)
IF your problems started IMMEDIATELY after going wireless, then I would strongly sugest that it is a poorly written driver that is causing the problem, and should be able to be fixed by downloading an update from the manufactures website. If there is none, you could try running a registry cleaner such as reg mechanic to clear it all up.
Good luck
Reply:Theres a virus which disquises itself as svchost.exe, u need to update your virus sortware then scan your whole computer ASAP.
If you don't have antivirus software, u need some, i recommend Mcaffee, but until then search online and you can find free online scans, like i think pcpitstop.com has one.
